About Relko

Originally from the UK we have been living in New Zealand now for over 20 years.

We made our first horse in the early 1970s in England when no one was making wooden Rocking horses.  The layered muscled effect gives the Relko horse it’s distinctive look which has become a trade mark of the design.

The Relko horse has been a true collaboration between the partners Tim & Kim with Kim, an international award winning artist, drawing the original design and Tim,  a pony and cattle judge and also a skilled woodworker and craftsman, spending many hours perfecting the finished model with both working on the end painting and finish.

After a few years selling locally and making horses to special order we were asked to place a horse in the Design Centre in the Haymarket in London, England and the horse appeared on the front cover of the international design brochure for that year 1978. After this we set up a craft workshop on the farm where we bred Limousin cattle, raced point to pointers and steeplechasers, ran a pony trekking centre and made up to 9 rocking horses a week for export all over the world. During this time the rocking horse won many awards for design and quality including an award from the Design Centre, the Devon Guild of Craftsman and a gold award for export from the International Export Association.

After 6 years travelling around the world attending trade fairs, we decided to move our enterprise to New Zealand and finally moved here in 1983. Since 1984 The horses have been made in Tauranga under contract by master craftsman Angus Parker, a perfectionist in finishing, so the horses have retained the high quality expected from a Relko horse. We have continued to market the horse worldwide with Tim, now in semi-retirement a keen cyclist, advertising the rockinghorses in various cycling event world wide and Kim continuing to paint and design at home in New Zealand.
